With this drawing you can clearly see the genius of the emergency redesign from a Cleveland class light cruiser to an Independence class light carrier. The two half-sister ships are the same below decks, using the same machinery.

The Buffalo Naval Park has the last Cleveland class light cruiser, the Little Rock, which is a DLG-4 (Converted to carry Terrier missiles). Little Rock has the last 6" gun turret left afloat. When I visited that ship with CVL veterans, they were able to find their way around the lower decks because their ship was the same below decks as the Cleveland class cruisers.
